Goal Setting - How to


Goal Setting is another one of those phrases that gets thrown around but no one ever really explains how to come up with a goal in the first place. One way people say to come up with goals is to 'dream big' or 'what's your 5 year vision?'. Here's how to come up with a goal.

Remove the circumstances from your life.

If money wasn't an issue, what would you be doing?

If you had a nanny/chef, what would you be doing?

If you had perfect health, what would you be doing?

If education/degrees/certifications weren't an issue, what would you want to do?

Everything else is just strategies and details.

Let's take the obvious circumstance: money. If money weren't an issue, what would you be doing? So now the goal should be, 'do that thing in a way that makes me money' or 'save up enough money so that thing can be done.'

You take your answers and you plan out how to tackle the circumstances. First you give yourself a time limit, say 5 years to have it completed. In order for that thing to be done in 5 years, what would need to be done in 2.5 years? What would need to be done in 1 year? 6 months? 3 months? Next month? Next week? Tomorrow? Today?

Take the time to walk it back. This is all just the planning stage. Adjust the time limit as needed but be sure to plan backwards all of the way to today. When doing so, you are more likely to be motivated.

The final step that not a lot of people do is conflict resolution. What things might come up and stop you? What might steer you from this path? What will you do when that happens?

Plan ahead of time for things that might stop you. Knowing ahead of time that things might pop up to work against you will get the creative side of your brain working for solutions. Keeping you on your path to completing the goal.

Be sure to write this out and put it someplace that you will see OFTEN. Even if that means putting it up on the fridge, making it your phone background, or making a pillowcase out of it. Every time you are able to cross something off your goal sheet as completed, you'll get a little dopamine rush which will help motivate you to accomplish more.
